New Wi-Fi Infrastructure at a Warehouse Complex of a Pharmaceutical Manufacturer

Challenge

One of GEDEON RICHTER manufacturing sites in Eastern Europe is located in Yegoryevsk and includes an A class warehouse with an area of about 6,000 m2. For accounting automation and Track&Trace project implementation, the Antares WTS system was introduced.

To provide uninterrupted data communication and online connection of terminals to the system a reliable and high-performance Wi-Fi coverage with seamless roaming was required.

Solution

In the framework of project implementation specialists of the LWCOM Radio Engineering Department performed:

Predictive planning of access points arrangement considering the existing conditions of warehouse premises. Stacks height (13 m) and length (about 50 m), configuration of possible restraints, and equipment used at a warehouse (very narrow aisle trucks) were considered.

Preparation of the solution design: a general concept of the Wi-Fi network architecture was developed and specification of equipment and works was estimated.

On-site radio inspection using a specialized measuring system, as well as models of access points and antennas. The purpose of this stage was to adjust the observed predictive models of radio coverage and reconfirm the best places for equipment placement.

Wireless network commissioning and start-up and its integration into the customer’s infrastructure

Post-project radio inspection as per the unfolded Wi-Fi infrastructure. Active signal measurement was performed and the report with an analysis of the observed characteristics was made.

Project Equipment

Cisco equipment was chosen as a basis for the wireless network project: AIR-AP2802E-R-K9 access points with AIR-ANT2535DW-R omni-directional antennas, AIR-AP2802E-R-K9 access points with narrow-beam AIR-ANT2566D4M-R antennas.

High demands were made to reliability, operation stability and fail-safety for the selected equipment: signal level parameters — 67 dBm, minimum data communication speed — 12 Mb/s.

Result

As a result of the project, a high-quality, reliable, high-performance wireless Wi-Fi coverage fully compatible with the existing Antares WTS system and data collection terminals in use was arranged on the territory of the GEDEON RICHTER warehouse complex.

The solution allowed collecting and communicating data to the Track&Trace system for its further communication to MMMP.
Consequently, it is planned to use this infrastructure for the SAP EWM system.
